Oooooh eBay is so exciting and addictive

Casio Melody WatchSo here I am, inside the house behind my computer on a sunny Sunday because I am waiting for a Casio Melody watch on eBay to be sold in 35 minutes... hopefully to me. I have a penchant for retro Casio digital watches (the nerdier the better) and this is one I have been looking for for quite a few years. It's very rare. I had it when I was ten years old and it plays bleepy electronic versions of various national anthems alongside Jingle Bells on Christmas Day and Happy Birthday every hour on your birthday (just in case you forget, I suppose).

I have no idea what happened to my original one. It was probably thrown away when the battery died. Isn't it always a dilemma what to keep and what to throw away? As a gadget lover, I do have quite a few relics from years gone by and am planning to display the particularly great ones (like the Psion 3a, the Palm V and the Nokia 5150) in a museum-like glass cabinet.
Wish me luck!

  1. I still haven’t received the watch… :-( Patience, patience…

  2. Yes!!! It arrived and I am wearing it. It makes a hell of a lot of annoying melody noises – but ohhhh, the nostalgia. :-)

  3. I had same on as well, but do not know model number. Can you send me model number for this watch so I can find one for myself? Thanks salenpurchase@yahoo.com

  4. Hi! i am SOOOOO jealous of you and and happy for you that you got that Melody Watch on eBay — I think i was bidding against you and I BLEW it and let it go by accident — how much did you pay and would you be willing to sell it to me? And if not, would you kindly either way let me know that model number because I can’t remember it for the life of me and I have also been searching for that same watch since I used to wear mine in 1980 and 1981 — the nostalgia factor is too great and I can’t stand it – I have to have that watch! I remember it played a Russian National Anthem, and several others – I can hear them all in my head in succession so clearly, and the ascending musical scale that once you reach the top, it plays all the notes back down to the tonic in succession. I miss it so! Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much and all the best – David

  5. Hi David,
I’m not going to sell my watch, but there are more for sale on eBay. Just search for “casio melody” and you’ll find quite a few now.
    Good luck!

  6. I had one of these from perhaps 6th grade ca. 1980 until I forgot it in a classroom summer 1987. It seemed amazing to have music coming out of a watch back then. Like the other guy said, those little songs and their odd electronic sound are still stuck in my head after all these years! Many happy memories.
