Discovering new artists that are not so new

Sometimes I am ahead of things and 'discover' new artists before the masses do. But sometimes I am way, way behind and think I have discovered someone fresh and new only to find out that they are wildly famous and I was just in the dark all that time. One such artist is Mika. I had never heard of him. I was googling The Gossip singer Beth Ditto and came across a YouTube video of her doing a duet with some guy called Mika. He's a Lebanon-born, London-raised performer who smacks of Freddie Mercury and the Scissor Sisters combined. Very poppy, catchy tunes. Good-looking bloke. Fun, basically.

One particularly catchy song is Big Girls (You are Beautiful), which he could have sung for Beth Ditto too. More on her later.

Oh and thanks to Roy Tanck for this great WordPress YouTube plug-in!

  1. Looking at some Mika you Tube stuff I was appalled to see this video of Mika being interviewed by Robert Jensen on Dutch TV.

I have always loathed Robert Jensen, but now even more. He is such an idiot and apparently a homophobe, it seems. At the beginning of the interview he tries to be funny about Mika’s song, “Grace Kelly”. He tells Mika that he has been listening to it on his iPod and that despite it being as “Camp as Christmas” and as “Gay as a three dollar bill” he simply loves it. He loves it DESPITE it being ‘gay’? Thanks Jensen, you retard. Mika was obviously uncomfortable about being interviewed by this Dutch moron.

Incidentally, Jensen even got the saying wrong. It’s supposed to be “queer as a 2-dollar bill”…
