Google is getting scarier and scarier

I've written about Google taking over the world before, but I tend to forget about the Big-Brother issues as I immerse myself in even more Google products for the sake of productivity and convenience. I simply can't imagine living without GMail.

Today I noticed a Google link trying to introduce me to yet another one of their new services: Google Web History. Sounded interesting, so I clicked it. That's when my neck hairs stood on end upon seeing all my web searches dating back to 2006.

Even seeing the searches and results from the last couple of days is surprisingly confrontational, but I was particularly shocked to see that Google appeared to have logged which iTunes tracks I was listening to on September 1st 2006. Apparently it has to do with having a Google Toolbar installed and activating PageRank (which admittedly was silly of me to do, but I was curious about Pageranks for various sites of mine). I'll be deactivating PageRank a.s.a.p. and probably also conveniently forgetting I even wrote this when I log into GMail again in 5 minutes.

  1. Hahaha did you know you can “pause” web history so it won’t record your every move? Or so they say… ;) Good to see you’re listening to Jackie Mittoo BTW!
