Last night Bits of Freedom organized another Big Brother Awards ceremony here in Amsterdam. Prizes were awarded to companies, individuals and governmental institutions that had most threatened our personal privacy during 2010. Unsurprisingly, very few winners showed up to accept their dubious awards.

Bye Bye Magic Mushroom
I really miss being proud of this country and the freedom and tolerance that it was once famous for. Our sphincter-mouthed Prime Minister continually stresses the importance of 'personal morals and responsibility' but then proceeds to implement an ever-increasing number of rules, thereby chipping away at our ability to make our own responsible choices. They are chipping away at the social welfare system and adding those chips to an ever-growing 'moralistic' nanny state - dictating to us what is and is not acceptable in our society.
Ans, Heb Jij Nog Wat?
Gisteravond is het mij eindelijk (na meer dan twee jaar uitnodigingen in mijn mailbox te hebben ontvangen) gelukt om een Ans, Heb Jij Nog Wat? avond bij te wonen. Ik heb wat gemist al die tijd! De informele talkshow zou om 21:00 beginnen en om 20:30 was het al zoeken naar een stoel. De beslagen ramen droegen bij aan het gevoel dat je onderdeel uitmaakte van een besloten club, een soort speakeasy - maar dan eentje waar wél gedronken en niet gerookt mocht worden (erg prettig!).
Schmaps
Schmap, a new online city guide has been very clever and scoured Flickr for photos of monuments, landmarks, bars and restaurants. If they find a photo relevant to one of their reviews, then they send an e-mail to the (usually amateur) photographer, informing them that their photo has been nominated for inclusion in their online travel guide.
I received such an e-mail last week, regarding two of my Hotel Okura photo's and it succeeded in making me feel rather proud for about 5 minutes. Those 5 minutes were enough for me to grant them permission to use my photo for free if it was selected... and it was. It's really very clever, the way Schmap approach you, namely with a seemingly personal e-mail from the managing director, Luke Ritchie, calling you by your first name and congratulating you on the nomination of your photo(s). I suckered for it anyway 
. Now all they need to do is get more critical reviews from visitors rather than the now rather old-fashioned paragraph-blurb about a restaurant. That's what made IENS so big in the Netherlands.
Customized to Ugliness
This has to be the ugliest car I have seen for years. Would you dare drive around town in it?
Queens Day 2007
Another year, another Queens Day on April 30th. This year we were blessed with gorgeous weather - blue skies and good temperatures. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits. Of course there's always the 'import' trash that get drunk and think they're cool off their heads and throwing beer bottles at people, but there were enough normal and healthily abnormal people to keep the atmosphere in the capital pleasant and partyish.
McDonalds Super-Size
Vorige week was ik voor het eerst in maanden weer 's in McDonalds (ja, echt!) om een snelle hap te nuttigen voor dat ik les ging geven bij CMM. Ik keek naar het bord en zag een Big Mac Menu voor €4,95 staan in grote letters. Daarnaast stond klein de optie: "Grote friet en Grote Fris €0,50", maar dat wilde ik niet, dus bestelde ik gewoon een Big Mac Menu. De jongen achter de kassa, met het naambordje 'Wesley', bracht mij €5,45 in rekening.
"Het is toch €4,95?" vroeg ik.
"Nee, u heeft het grote Big Mac Menu - die is €5,45. Begrijpt u mij?"
"Ik wil niet de grote, die heb ik niet besteld".
"U heeft een Big Mac Menu - die is €5,45. Begrijpt u wat ik zeg?"
Ik keek hem verward aan. De verwarring had echter voornamelijk te maken met zijn toon die klonk alsof hij met een halve randdebiel te maken had.
Fiets Routeplanner
Geobsedeerd als ik ben met de meest efficiente route fietsen van A naar B, is de Routecraft fietsplanner een geweldige vondst. Ik heb wel een functie op TomTom voor fietsroutes maar op de een of andere manier geloof ik TomTom niet altijd. Routecraft geeft een zeer helder overzicht van de route door Amsterdam met de (ook voor fietsers vaak vervelende) wegwerkzaamheden en snelheidscamera's (hehe).
Pussy Shaken
Call me old-fashioned, but there is something disturbing about having too many men at a so-called lesbian night. Mixed gay events are often swamped with gay men (like the monthly UNK at Club 8), making it hard to spot the lesbians through the sea of glistening six-packs. I suppose there are simply more gay men that go out and spend money at the bar than there are gay women. Number logic. So lesbian nights often restrict entrance to women only or announce (as did the flyer for Pussy Shake, where I went last night) that men are welcome when accompanied by a lady.
