Incompetent Companies

It really does seem like there are more incompetent companies out there than competent ones. I have recently been frustrated by a variety of incompetencies ranging from minor irritations to major problems with, for example, my website.

In the previous post I wrote about Hosting Zoom and how their service unfortunately declined rapidly since they introduced their so-called “Failover Hosting” some months ago. “Failover” sounds a little ambiguous, but I think it’s supposed to encourage a feeling of well-being and security in clients. Nothing could be further from the truth as Hosting Zoom over-sold space on their servers resulting in error after error and unreachable sites. That’s incompetent company number 1.

Then there’s a less serious, but still annoying issue I have with the bi-monthly Dutch technology/gadget magazine, Bright. I subscribed to the magazine soon after it first appeared, just over a year ago. Single issues purchased in shops cost € 4,99 and a I paid €25 for 6 issues in a year. However, they keep selling the magazine at a reduced price of € 2,99 in the shops now, so I worked out that as a subscriber I’m paying more. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be, right? On writing to them it took a few reminder mails to hear anything back and then eventually they offered to reimburse me € 5,50 so I get a year’s subscription for € 19,50. Very nice of them – only it’s been three weeks and they have still not reimbursed me. More reminders to follow I suppose.

Another little gripe would be Canon.. I’ll write about them in a separate post…

Hosting Zoom Can't Host WordPress Sites?!?

After a long correspondence with Hosting Zoom support, I have discovered that for $99 per year, it is apparently not possible to host a WordPress site at Hosting Zoom without problems. I’ve been experiencing 500 errors (internal server error) so frequently recently that my blog is barely reachable let alone ‘writable’. Hosting Zoom technical support (who do, I must add, respond swiftly to support requests) claim that a WordPress script is using too much memory / CPU / resources / whatever. We’re talking a FRESH WORDPRESS INSTALL here (one I installed for testing purposes alongside this one)!

The WordPress script uses too much memory in a single PHP process for this specific shared hosting environment.

Putting it bluntly, your hosting plan does not provide you with sufficient resources to allow WordPress to perform perfectly. Don’t get me wrong, it’s capable of running it – but not to an extent that you’re able to serve multiple user’s with.

Proving My Hosting Company Wrong

apacheDon’t be shocked by the sudden bland appearance of this blog. All the content is still here – only I have deactivated all plugins (except the spam filter) and put it back to the default theme. This is to (probably, possibly) prove my webhosting company (HostingZoom) wrong when they claim that all the code 500 Server Configuration Errors I’ve been experiencing recently are due to a faulty script in WordPress – probably a plugin or the theme I was using.

So I almost want there to be errors even now to justify me not sticking with this boring design. Merel and I are experiencing the exact same problems on www.zeroblack.org which is also hosted under the same account and on the same server (but with a seperate WordPress install). The theme we’re using there is admittedly an extensive one, but also an expensive one… so we assume it has been tested.

Anyway, I’ll keep you posted and in the meantime, if you do get a 500-error, try refreshing a few times and then let me know. Thanks you for your patience.
